My story

Hello! I have been living in Japan since August 2015. Before that I lived in Jamaica, where I was born.
One of my favourite things to do in Jamaica is go to the beach. Leaving the beach made my decision to move to Japan very difficult, but I really wanted to get a change of scenery. I wanted to step out of my comfort zone, and experience living in a culture that was so different from mine.

I have been enjoying my time in Japan so far. I teach English during the week and I’m a tourist on weekends. My favorite places in Japan are Hokkaido and Kyoto. One of the things I love the most about Japan is how friendly everyone is. I really love the food, and my favorites are udon, okonomiyaki and yakiniku.

I saw snow and experienced the four seasons for the first time while living in Japan. Jamaica is a very tropical island, and it is hot all year round.  One of my favorite moments about living in Japan so far is going to the “Yuki Matsuri”  in hokkaido in February. The ice sculptures were amazing! And I ate the most delicious sushi and ramen there!

One of the biggest culture shocks for me was learning how to get around on the subways and figuring out how to navigate major train stations (I still get lost all the time).

When I came to Japan, I only knew two Japanese words (Hai, arigato),  learning the language has been very difficult but it helps when I speak to Japanese people. I find that I learn the language easier by listening to people speak and by asking lots of questions and asking my friends /collegues to communicate with me mostly in Japanese. Since I’ve only been here for 9 months, I still have a long way to go, but I believe that if I practice more and constantly. I will improve very quickly.
